East Millinocket is interpreted as meaning “east of many islands” in the language of Maine’s Native Abenaki inhabitants. The town is situated on the northern side of the West Branch of the Penobscot River, seventy miles north of Bangor. The town was incorporated on February 21, 1907.

According to the United States Census Bureau, East Millinocket has a total area of 7.81 square miles (20.23 km2), of which, 7.10 square miles (18.39 km2) of it is land and 0.71 square miles (1.84 km2) is water.
As of the official Maine census of 2010, there were 1,723 people, 768 households, and 492 families residing in the town. The population density was 242.7 inhabitants per square mile (93.7 /km2).
